As has been expected, Anthropic is not wasting time in filing its papers for an initial public offering, which is likely to come in mid-November — and in the filing the company discusses the "existential risks to humanity" that its technology poses without "appropriate safeguards."On Monday, Anthropic revealed its IPO filing for the first time, setting the stage for a second major tech/AI IPO this year after SpaceX, and for a new wave of wealth in San Francisco. As NBC News reports, the filing also lays bare the massive spending that Anthropic intends to do in the near term, and the large losses it expects to incur before becoming profitable. The filing notes revenue that has grown "1,368% year over year for the three months ended June 30, 2026," but also notes an $80.7 billion net loss for the first six months of 2026 — following a $42 billion net loss in all of 2025.The company reportedly has raised $141 billion of capital through the end of June and currently has $112.4 billion of cash, but the reason to push ahead with the IPO despite political backlash and worldwide concerns over the pace of AI development seems indicative of Anthropic's need for more quick cash. The filing seems to acknowledge this. Beyond the next 12 months, the filing says, computing infrastructure costs and the uncertainty of growth numbers means "we may be required to seek additional financing sooner than we currently anticipate."And while the IPO could give Anthropic a valuation in the neighborhood of $2 trillion — potentially larger than SpaceX's $2.1 trillion IPO valuation — we don't know what the stock price will be set at, nor how many shares will be sold. The IPO filing is also required to acknowledge risks inherent in the business, and this is where we find the text that basically says, "Give us your money! But we still may end up killing us all!""Concerns have been raised both within our organization and by other researchers, regulators, policymakers, and industry participants that sufficiently advanced AI systems could, if not developed, deployed, and operated with appropriate safeguards, oversight, and security measures, pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity," the filing notes.Amid a wave of lawsuits over ChatGPT and significant pushback nationwide over data centers and potential job losses — not to mention revelations about its agents going rogue on government websites and elsewhere — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced last month that the company has paused its IPO plans.Earlier this year it had looked like the two AI giants were set to have dueling IPOs in the fourth quarter, but that will not come to pass.Anthropic's stock ticker symbol, in case you were wondering, will be "ANT."Previously: Anthropic Researcher Says There’s 10% Chance of AI Killing ‘All Humans’ Within 10 Years
